How not to go crazy with purchases when moving in your first flat

I discovered the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up at the same time as one of my friends. This friend is just above forty years old, she has children, and like me, she had no idea we didn’t HAVE to keep all the stuff we did. The main difference between us was that she already had her own flat, and I still lived at my parents’, so she had more to declutter than I had simply because she had more space.

We decluttered around the same time, compared progress and encouraged each other when the process was getting tough. When we were pretty much done, that friend told me something I had never realised before. She said “Lucky you! You are not going to make the mistakes most people make when furnishing their flats for the first time. You’re not going to overbuy or buy things out of obligations”.

It turns out, I did make mistakes, but assuredly not as many as I would have if I hadn’t read Marie Kondo’s book first. I wanted to share my experience with you. And if you’re going to move into your first flat, you may be able to avoid the mistakes I made!

Big Magic: A book that changed my life ll

I have already told you about another book that changed my life. This one also has magic in the title, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic is mainly about creativity. It addresses the way we conceptualise artists and their inspiration. Liz Gilbert takes you on a journey to rethink creativity and your relationship with it.

She first discusses the cursed artist stereotype, burdened with their talents and describes how it was historically constructed. She goes on to show that this construction is detrimental to artists and deprives us of inspired artists in the long run. She then proceeds to open an alternative option that allows an artist to work in delight.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: A book that changed my life

When I tell people that one of my favourite books is called “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, lots of people look at me as if I’m an alien. I happen to have a master’s degree in French and English literature. There are tons of novels I have fallen in love with. (My favourites are Jane Austen’s Persuasion and Stendhal’s La Chartreuse de Parme – Charterhouse of Parma).

Still, when people want to know about a book that really changed my life, I tell them about Marie Kondo’s masterpiece.

You see, the thing is, I don’t think the book is about tidying up, it’s about something else entirely.

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe for New Zealand

Now that most things are settled regarding my trip, I can barely contain myself! I can already see myself in New Zealand, taking in this marvellous scenery, hiking, kayaking, and meeting amazing people there.

Since I cannot time travel to October (not for lack of trying), the only thing left to do is focusing on the last details before I travel.

I started planning the travel capsule wardrobe I will be taking with me and if anything, that has gotten me even more fired up! But who cares? At worst, I’ll bother my neighbours on the plane with my enthusiasm! ; )

September Delight

September is here; autumn is right around the corner and I suddenly get the urge to start a blog.

This is a fantastic and precious moment in my life: I have finished my Master degree in January and I have moved into a flat on my own. I have started this great adventure in May this year and I am excited to share it.

The next big adventure will start in October. I will spend two weeks in New Zealand. Ever since I first watched The Lord of the Rings, I promised myself I would visit this magical place. It is happening and I would like to take you with me on my journey: There and Back Again.
